Ohio slams AOL over billing
State attorney general cites 250 complaints; AOL refutes claims, says it's ready to discuss them.

Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro said Monday his office has filed a complaint against America Online, accusing the world's largest Internet service provider of violating an earlier agreement to promptly honor disconnection requests.

I wondered if anyone else had trouble getting their AOL disconnected.  It was like pulling teeth when I told them to cancel my membership.  :smile.gif

Do you think that AOL should reimburse these people for overcharging them, when they should have already been disconnected?  What are your thoughts?

Msslm, I would like to hear what your experiences were when trying to cancel the service.

If people are taking the proper steps to cancel an account and it isn't being done, then they should get reimbursed.  No question.  If I call a company today to cancel my account then it should be canceled today.  That it what I expect and what I have experienced with other companies.  The only question I would have is what steps people took to cancel their service.  For example,  wouldn't rely on an e-mail to relay my cancelation notice.

It took me three days of calling them to cancel my account with them.  I didn't go the route of cancelling my membership online either, I wanted to make sure they knew I didn't want their service anymore.  Of course I had used their service for over 2 yrs too.  But they kept trying to offer all this stuff to keep me a member too.  'Oh ma'am we can offer you an hourly membership, that way you can keep you screenname, blah, blah, blah.'  It took me talking to several different reps to get the point across that I didn't want their service anymore.

They really didn't like it when they asked me why I was canceling my service with them and I told them it was because I found a service that was almost 3 times cheaper than what I was paying them and much more reliable too.

AOL subscribers: Stay and pay, or flee and get it free?

Times change. The past couple of years, AOL members have been ditching the service in droves. In response, AOL has been quietly transitioning from a company that has traditionally stressed the flagship online service that sits behind a proprietary "walled garden" into one that plans to compete aggressively against free Web "portals." That pits AOL against its natural rivals Yahoo, Microsoft (MSN) and Google.

Nearly all the information and entertainment contentavailable on the online service has been or will soon be offered for free at the revamped portal site, AOL.com, still in its testing "beta" phase.

AOL's strategic shift raises important questions for consumers: Does it pay to become an AOL member anymore? If you already subscribe, is it worth sticking around?
