This weeks's lesson deals with the Martyrdom of Joseph Smith. Many prophets throughout time had to seal their testimony with blood as a witness towards those who fought against the Truth. Do you think you could stand to be a martyr if necessary?
I thought about this question this week, and I really can not decide. I have my children that need me now, and I think this is a great calling. If I were the leader of so many I may have done the same, however he never wanted to be a martyr, it was forced upon him. Although a true profit of God, I believe he thought he would remain president, and prophet.
My question is, would I have the fortitude to have become one of the pioneers, especially the handcart companies. After losing so many children, and family members, how did they hold on to the faith that God was watching over them?
I have heard a lot of people say that it would be easier to die for the church rather then live for the church. Living the gospel is not always easy for everyone. I remember while serving a mission I was told by some of the members that if they were to be held at gun point and were then told to deny Christ or the Church; the decision would be easy. In reality though we are not asked to die for the Church but to live for it. Sometimes a much harder commandment.
That is true, alot of people have trouble with the smallest of things, like dressing modestly. I do not think it is hard at all now days, at least for me. It can be hectic at times, but we are not persecuted, and killed now. Missouri finally lifted their unheard of extermination law. That is one that is hard for me to accept. They did not do that to even the Indians. This shows how Satan can control the simple minded.
