DESERTER SAYS HE WAS TREATED WELL BY U.S. MILITARY
A British Columbia man who was arrested recently for deserting the U.S. Marine Corps nearly 40 years ago said he will always regret his decision to flee.

I am amazed at the figure below - 17,000 - that is not a few soldiers that is a lot! Morale must have been at a real low for a long time.

This actually shocks me very little. For the longest time before the Iraq war, a short military career was a great way to get some money to pay for college. Serve a few years...get paid...go to school. That was the thought. What most really never considered or rationalized as a low possibility was that they might actually have to be a soldier or go to war. So when this war came about, a lot are not now seeing the benefit or do not like the new risk associated with the money for college.
