Here is my biggest problem with what might be Marriott's view (as expressed by Mitt Romney in the article you gave me):

I agree, JB.
But I've been researching some, and Marriott's Ritz chain doesn't allow pornography. And apparently the corporate-owned Marriott hotels do not either, just the franchises.
Might be straws, but...
What I find MOST interesting is that there was just recently a huge controversy at Times & Seasons for a post written by Matt Evans in which he called Elder Marriott a pimp and a pornographer. Yeah, he used those colorful terms. T&S took down the post, and I can't find a cached copy on Google. But some comments on it are here:

I don't have issues with what Matt tried to say (yeah, he has a way to say things sometimes, he probably chose the wrong words to describe it)
Matt said in T&S that Marriott makes $50,000,000.00 per annum on the sale of adult movies, which makes it the third largest distributor of adult movies in the U.S. I will research more about this, but if is true it is obvious why Marriott does not want to stop the porn...it makes a lot of money! By the way, the hotels that the Marriott family personally owns (no franchises) they ALL offer hard-core porn.
Let's keep in mind that Marriott is the CEO AND Chairman of the company so he indeed controls the board.
BUT it is incomprehensible that people would think that just because Marriott is a General Authority he is automatically right or somehow "correct" by justifying his distribution of porn. Again, members thinking that a calling makes someone "higher" over another, even Spiritually. *shaking head*. Sad.
The Marriots do control lots of things from the hotel chains, they even put Books of Mormons in every room but leave the porn? They make it smoke-free but leave the porn?
Vickie Burress of Citizens for Community Values (as well as other anti-porn organizations) tried to approach Marriott to see if they could stop the pornography issue but they refused. Simply: THEY DO NOT WANT TO!
Elder Marriott was very clear: It is "economical"! What more proof is needed than his own words? He defended it, at any moment he tried to say it was a decision of the board or anything of that nature but simply the saddest truth: HE MAKES MILLIONS OUT OF IT!
First, to be fair that comment was made before Marriott was called as a 70.
Second, the CEO has leverage but doesn't control the corp. Shareholders and the board do. There are exceptions but I don't know enough to opine with Marriott Corp.
Third, I want to see proof of the $50 million number. I doubt it makes that in profit from just adult movies, but I could be wrong.
Last, it doesn't matter to me so much of the amount made. The fact they are even shown is the point. It is wrong. And Marriott is wrong to associate himself with it - especially as an elder. Edited: tortdog on 30th Aug, 2007 - 12:22pm

I think there is no arguing over this... Marriott himself said why it stays - economics. Now check this: If I am a partner in a business and my partners demand a gambling machine in it and they say that the reason it is there is because it is economically viable and I am part of that business does that mean that I am in some way PART of what that gambling machine will do to everyone that comes in contact with it? Now if someone meets me and say, "Aren't you this religious guy 'big' in the Mormon faith, and is it you who allows gambling in your establishment?" and I respond, "Yes, but it is an economics issue" then what is that really saying? Am I FORCED to be a partner in the business or do I still have a CHOICE?
Now I could be exceptional or let me use a better word "peculiar" as in a "peculiar people" and say to the press or the partners or whomever asks, "You know what, as long as we offer gambling machines I will no longer be a partner in this business." That would be a true teaching statement wouldn't it? You may even read about it in the next Sunday School manual. However, the LOVE of money is the root of all evil. It is hard to JUSTIFY when something is wrong, when it is wrong from any angle, more especially when you are in a position of SIGNIFICANT trust / authority.
To illustrate this... if I were called as a Patriarch tomorrow there would be definite things I would have to change in my life, not because I am necessarily PART of any evil, but I have to ensure that I avoid even the APPEARANCE of it. People must look at me and not find anything questionable.
I believe I have made myself clear on this.
I agree with your post, JB. I am not sure how Elder Marriott reconciles this.
Years ago I also wrote a letter complaining to Marriott Corp. about the pornography in their rooms. I received a similar letter (saying it's about providing guests what they want).
And, I am wondering if it is out of line to call a GA a "pimp and a pornographer" when that GA apparently is fine having defended the sale of pornography in the past.
