Comments: Well, to answer the question broadly, yes it's a problem as much as porn is a problem generally--my vote would to resist its availability everywhere. I think that the intent of your question, however, is to (Apart from simply igniting dialogue) solicit views as to whether the fact that JW is a member of the church, which preaches that pornography is to be shunned, is 'a problem'. The answer is simple but complex in some respects. My view is that Elder Marriott should do whatever he can with his influence to discourage the availability of adult content on TVs on Marriott properties. Given that most Marriott properties are franchised, that influence may be limited somewhat. But I do reject that overly simplistic assessment, because the owner of a brand and franchise has power to maintain a certain standard for reputation, etc. That would include what the hotel offered by way of amenities/TV content.
Then there's the argument that to be economically viable the hotel chain would have to provide services to a diverse clientele, including consumers of porn. Increasing the number of properties increases the wealth of someone that presumably uses the resources for Good, and also increases the exposure of the Book of Mormon in every additional Marriott room (Again, the BOM availability must be a condition of franchising.. . So why not also forbid porn?) So maybe there's a
Greater Good argument?
I believe that probably the best solution to the difficult situation is to do just what is done now: the first communication on the TV and other welcome materials is to educate the viewer that they can lock out adult content and choose for themselves.
For me to answer this I would first want to hear Elder Marriott's thoughts in the matter. Maybe its something he has tried to change but can't because of a regulation or something. I would like to believe that if he could he would stop the use of it in his chain.
He did talk about the matter by replying to a letter that someone in an anti-porn organization wrote to him. Basically, he replied by saying (Paraphrasing, NOT actual words) that is not profitable to Marriott hotels if they do not have porn.
Here is the letter, it explains the reason as being "Economically viable" For the hotel:
