The "Golden Generation" takes revenge
Bucharest - The charity match between the "94 Romanian and Brazilian teams took place on Saturday night, in Timisoara, in an extraordinary atmosphere, during the "Champions" Night" event. Our [Romanian] players defeated the Brazilian team by 4-1.

I was there ... it was a night to remember!
It was a pleasure to see those great players. Both the romanian and the brazilian players showed why they are so loved by the fans. Hagi lost maybe a little speed, but he still "caresses" the ball. Popescu was fitter then 3 years ago, when he ended his contract with Dinamo. Belodedici - 2 times Champions League (Steaua Buc. and Red Star Belgrade) - was unbelievable ... he can't be 41 years old. Prunea (GK) is 39, but he saved 2 balls like in his best days.
Dunga showed us why he was Brasil's captain for so many years (he was injured, but he kept playing)... and the way he can give 40 m passes ... amazing. Djalminia hasn't aged a bit. Mauro Silva, Bebeto, Paulo Sergio, Careca, Leonardo, Jorginho ... great players.
All the money raised (around 300,000 euro) was donated to the victims of the floods.
The only regret I have is that this match wasn't played there, at the world cup in '94 (Sweden was better at penalties). Many think, to this day that out "golden team" could have beaten the future champions.
Here are the starting teams:
Romania: Prunea - Dan Petrescu, Prodan, Selymes - Sabau, Popescu, Lupescu, I. Dumitrescu - Hagi, Raducioiu
Brasil: Taffarel - Jorginho, Concalves, Mauro Silva - Leonardo, Dunga, Marcio Santos, Mazinho - Paulo Sergio, Careca, Bebeto
Offtopic but, Unfortunately, the way our current team looks, we can't even dream about that kind of performances, but that is another discussion. |
