None of us are suggesting longer than three days, indeed I could only handle two and I also believe there are some key things mentioned for longer fasts:
1. You should be experienced at fasting already
2. You should be healthy
3. Not pregnant, not a child, not frail
4. Lastly, you should have a purpose
Keep in mind... as a missionary, how many times were you told that you should fast only once a month, but at the same time as missionaries we fasted every week because it is so effective.
I am NOT advocating anyone do more than what has been suggested by the Church, but at the same time I will say that men put way more emphasis on food than you may think. Fasting really is an eye opener.
Rather off topic, but... Muslims for hundreds of years have been fasting for months everyday during Ramadan with great results. Jethro Kloss, the man who discovered the power of the soybean also testified how many were cured of ailments from fasting. My point is that we should not become robotic with fasting. It has many uses OUTSIDE of the monthly Church fast. |
I am a stubborn girl, I know, but, if I feel through the spirit, to fast for a long period of time, I'm going to do it. If the Lord reveals something to me that He wants me to perform, I'm going to perform it. I'm aware of the recommendations and agree with them to a certain point. But everyone is on a different level. I don't mean higher or lower, just different. Not every pregnant woman should fast. Most doctors would say no way. I however was instructed by the Lord to proceed. So I did. And if He wanted me to fast for a month I hope I would be as obedient, Everyone's spiritual requirements are different. For someone to just conceive in their own mind one day, "Hey, the Lord fasted 40 days, I think I'll try that" Would be silly. However if the Lord says, " I want you to fast 40 days" That changes things-doesn't it? We should seek guidance through the spirit on these things.
