Internet Rants

About: This thread is about things you just cannot understand about other people's web sites, communities, etc. These 'things' may have caused you emotional distraught or just simply turned you off. For example, often I visit other Communities for information, codes, updates, etc. In fact I have very high post counts on these external Forums, and they suit my needs well, however, unlike this site you see a lot of messages and responses that make you almost want to slap the person. For instance, if I start a thread entitled, 'What is the Best Brand of Jeans?' then someone may reply "Sorry, I do not wear jeans". Not only is that reply a waste for me to check it (when I get notification of reply), but it makes you want to ask, "So why did you reply then?".

Other Communities: Although you can speak about that in general here we would rather you tell us about it in this thread.

No Names or URLs: You can talk about the other sites, but please do not place any URLs to it or official names as we do not feel like hearing about law suits from the reviewed site against you for slander.

Rant About This Site: if you want to talk about specific aspects of this site then feel free to do so here:

The biggest turn off for me for any multi page web site is the trasition between pages. I see so many sites that people creating them had apparently so many different ideas on the color scheme or layout for the site that they decided to use each idea for each page. This eliminates any hope of knowing from page to page what to expect. For instance if you have a home page with a red, white, and blue scheme with the menu bar on the left, then why on earth would you use green and orange with a floating menu bar on the link for page 2? I understand the concept for having some portions of a web site different to make them jump out at you a little bit but please lets keep it within some type of reason and order.

Yes, I also believe in keeping a theme. That reminds me of those site with this beautiful entrance that is all flavored and enticing and then when you enter you get something totally different. It is much like opening a can of worms when you were expecting Campbell's Soup.

I ran across a site the other day that I must now rant about. The designer did not have any idea as to what ad placement means. There were ads mixed in with the material on the site that made it very hard to distinguish if you were still reading information or if someone was attempting to sell you something. I am only guessing this is an attempt to boost affiliate revenue. On top of that however he basically used way too much animation. All of his banners were animated, talking and even flashing in some cases. This made it very difficult to view the site. He even went so far as to having a floating banner follow you down the page. This normally wouldn't bother me except every time I moved the mouse as I follow along with my cursor when I read the banner would jump under my mouse covering what I was reading.

There are users that have come here complaining about the same thing. Perhaps I should send them to other sites like the one you described. That is a very common practise now that has mostly been forced upon everyone because of the change of market. I never thought I would have to do it and look at me now - ads everywhere, and I hate it, but it is a necessary evil.

Another thing I hate is long loading images... the whole site loads and there you are with a DSL connection waiting for one picture to load as though you were using Dial-up - what were they thinking?
