That is a good question. Why will some people read the Book of Mormon because a prophet said so and not for a Local leader. This problem is also found here in the area that I live in too. It all comes down to pride and jealousy. Which will be their downfall. Could we liken these types of people to those sign seekers in the scriptures? Or where it says in the scriptures 'close to me with their lips and not with their hearts' (to that effect). As a true disciple of Jesus christ we would read the Book of Mormon because of the very testimonies that we have....like Joseph Smith's when he said that one could get closer to God by reading it!
Me and my wife didn't start reading tell last night. we have been reading D&C and other things, but The Book of Mormon has been on the side. I think that reading the scriptures is a good thing regardless of which book therein, but this challenge has been spoken about Sunday after Sunday, visit after visit and testimonies shared about the blessings people are receiving for taking this challenge. Following local leaders or a prophet, either or...if they are reading it I say 'good for them'. They may not obtain the blessings others would but those blessings have been promised them also.
Last night we figured we would need to read 13 pages or so a night to meet the challenge. Well I'm not sure we would get that done so we read the first book of Nephi... 50 some pages in one sitting. not to boast about that achievement, I know others have done more. why I say that short story is today being the day after I feel so good. There is no better way to gain a testimony of The Book of Mormon than to simply read it, and yes, while I have been reading in D&C and other books my testimony has grown in other ways... but the cornerstone of this our sacred religion and simple treasures is The Book of Mormon. I don't need to restate the blessings promised if we accept this challenge. The simple feelings I feel today are a testimony of those promises. how great it will be when we have finished. Knowing in our hearts we were faithful and obedient to a challenge given to us by our living prophet. regardless of our other short comings. congratulations to each of us who succeed. may we all learn and share a little more in the year to follow.

I was reading about 2 chapters every night, and then I went on vacation with my girlfriend right after christmas. We were staying with her dad and I was cramming to finish by new year's day (12:00 AM). I was reading the last couple verses after the clock struck 12. I know it's probably not that crucial that it would be EXACTLY before 12 AM on January 1st, 2006, but I wanted to say that I did it before this year began. It was an absolutely great and testimony-building experience. I can't believe I never read the Book of Mormon this whole time, even though I've had one since I was 7 or 8 years old. It could've helped me so much in these past couple years, but I barely read any of it. The most I would read before that "challenge" was a verse or 2 every night. Now I read at least a chapter every night (I started reading it again). I took a break after I finished the BOM and read a lot of D&C and then a bunch of the Bible, but it wasn't helping me as much as the BOM did, so I returned to start again.
