For first dates, movies are terrible. I like dinner and a walk in the park, or laser tag, or something else fun and nonthreatening. Cost - enough for a decent dinner, but not a fancy place.
For subsequent dates, it's fun to cook together, then do something fun outdoors, or see a show together. Cost should still be reasonable.
Honestly, some of my favorite dates have involved doing mundane, daily tasks with the one I love. On my birthday, for example, we did dishes together between classes. She gave me a gift, but being with her and working together was more valuable to me.
