But I think it would be so cute to see an Angel with wings! Artistically is beautiful.
Well that is how many of the ancient prophets wrote - artistic and beautiful. In order to give 'power' to the angels they describe them as with wings to show their ability to move and act. Arabic writers use similar fashion (like poetry) to describe other things. For instance it would be easy to say 'sunrise' but more imaginative to say 'The round glory that rises in the East'
I've always been taught that Angels are Emmisaries from God who have a mission to perform each time they are sent to someone. Angels have no free will and as such they only do as they are programmed to do. I think wings were put on angels by men to be symbolic of the fact that they are the important messengers God uses sometimes to communicate to mankind. Why do Airline and Jet Pilots wear wings? They fly through the heavens.
One of the most important signs of exalted beings that we know about is the winged disk or winged sun that is found in ancient Sumeria, Akkad, and Egypt.
The Prophet Joseph Smith reported that the Angel that appeared to him repeated everything he had said - word for word- many times over until it was imprinted in JS's intelligence and memory. The Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) also was visited by an Angel of the Lord (Gabriel) who instructed the illiterate Mohammed to Repeat after him over and over again. These accounts and others throughout history always remind me of some kind of single function highly advanced robotic android figure.. like that holographic image of Princess Leah in Star Wars that played itself over again and again on the table for Luke Skywalker.
And of course, I'm with JS in believing they have no wings and appear as we do.
Nephiproject, I always enjoy reading your postings. Specially because it seems like you're such an intelligent person. It's great to come to a forum and learn from the people in here.
I thought about Angels as kind of robotic sometimes, as both of you mentioned, the fact that they appeared to people in the old times and they repeat their messages over and over it shows the purpose of them. Now, I have a question for all of you. At the same way that Prophets exist at the present time why they don't share their experiences directly with God or Angels just like Joseph Smith or other Prophets did before?. I have wonder this over the years. Any thoughts?
It is my understanding that 'Prophets' play a special role different than angels. Prophets are appointed by God to remind us, warn us, cajole us, teach us, and serve as examples to us. In addition they are privy to and serve as the mouthpiece of revelation directly from God - no angels serving as intercessories. That's why I love President Hinckley so much. He is truly a Prophet as I understand it and has never led us astray. He shares his thoughts from the pulpit of the General conferences and in articles he has written in the Ensign.
I think I didn't ask the question in the right way (oh well, english is my second language after all)
What I was asking is why the Prophets do not share their experiences about Angels visiting to them and giving them special revelations from God just like they did with Joseph Smith ? Why we don't hear about this?
