Michael Phelps named Team USA's flag bearer for opening ceremony
Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, was chosen by a vote of fellow Team USA members to lead the delegation Friday at the Maracana Stadium in Rio in his fifth, and final, Olympics. Ref. USAToday.
Am I the only one who thinks Mike Phelps is not a good role model for our kids. Granted he is a good swimmer and he has won gold medals for the USA in the Olympics. But I remember a couple years ago the trouble he got into with drugs. IF you want to be a athlete that is all good and you should be a good role model for the younger generation. All Mr. Phelps is doing is showing us hey go do drugs but clean yourself up before you compete on the world stage. That way you look good and people forget about your drug usage.
According to one report when Phelps was at his lowest and in a rehab he was given the book: The Purpose-Driven Life by author Rick Warren to read and it changed his life. This turned him around and he felt he had a purpose. While you may think it odd that he was still trying to figure out his purpose let's keep in mind that from an early age he was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). There has been speculation of him being on the higher end of the autism spectrum but that has not been conclusive.
Yes a lot of challenges to face if he is ADHD and on the higher end of the autism spectrum. Plus the fact that he commented to other athletes about drug use makes one wonder if it the pot calling the kettle black. Either way if he has cleaned up his act then one should give him another chance. I just do not think he is that great of role model yet and he will need to prove it to me.
