Some people are fortunate to be born natural artists where they can take colors and create very professional works of art without guidance or instruction of any kind. Then you have others that need to be guided from beginning to end or coached in order to see their potential. The question here is... Which kind of artist are you?

I am a natural artist. A very bad natural artist. I can't draw stick figures. I can see it all in my head, I just can't put it on paper. My son, on the other hand, is quite a good natural artist. He has always been able to draw very well. I don't know where he gets his talent.
I'm a terrible artist. I have never considered myself to be very talented when it comes to drawing. Having said that, I do believe that "artistic talent" is in the eye of the beholder.
For the past 2 years one of my multiple church callings has been "Primary Specialist". In this calling I was asked to go to primary and help out with an autistic boy. So to make a long story short, we would draw for 2 hours every Sunday. I would draw whatever he asked for. These things included tractors, houses, trees, water, trains, trucks, people, apples, etc. Although I found my drawings to be somewhat on the horrific side, he absolutely loved them. In fact I was told by his parents that every week he would take the pictures home and hang them on his wall. I found it very difficult to draw for him since I am 100% untalented in this area. But it was neat to see that he didn't care.
I think I have a little natural talent from my mom, but I think "natural talent" can only get you so far. I filled up a few sketch books in my youth, but only when I began taking college courses did I begin to see any real improvement, though of course I still have a long way to go (but don't get me wrong, I think continued practice, particularly sketching daily, is of great benefit, despite the fact that I don't actually do it myself). Maybe natural talent is simply the ability to pick up on aesthetic concepts quickly, and an inherited genetic boost in hand-eye coordination.
I've been able to draw well every since I was very young. I can look at a photo or still-life and almost duplicate it. How good it turns out is only limited by how much time I want to spend on it. I'm almost a drawing "savant" because I can't do much of anything else very well.
I can draw things from my mind as too, but it doesn't turn out as detailed. And strangely, I'm not very good with color or painting. But give me a pencil or ink and watch out!
There has been times I would of traded this ability to have natural talent in another area, like singing or math or sports. Now I realise this is the talent the Lord wanted me to have. I only wish He would have given me the will and patience to go along with it!
Indygo, I bet you have a natural ability to really see things, to see shapes and forms and how they relate to each other. If this is the case, I would bet that your world is a lot more interesting than many people's. I would be very ineterested in seeing some of your work!
