Cowboys fire coach Wade Phillips, NFL Network reports
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones fired Wade Phillips as head coach following the team's 1-7 start to the season, ESPN and the NFL Network reported. The Cowboys named offensive coordinator Jason Garrett the interim head coach. Ref. USAToday
Does a head coach get fired very often during the season.
Yes he may not be going that well but a lot has to do with players not performing on the field. So perhaps they should look at the management staff before the coach.
The Cowboys had never fired a coach during the season prior to this, however, it does happen on other teams. I agree that firing Phillips isnt going to turn this team around...he didn't carry the football. This team just isnt that good and it is going to take a long and painful amount of time to fix it.
Tony Romo isnt that great of a QB, but he is the best since Aikman retired and the next best was a guy named Quincy Carter and no one even knows who he is anymore. It wasnt until they got Aikman and completed the Herschel Walker trade that the Cowboys had all their success post mid Landry years. There isnt a Herschel Walker anywhere on that roster to fleece another team with and they would actually have to fight Buffalo, Carolina, Detroit, San Fransisco and Cincinnati for the worst record to try and get a franchise QB out of the draft (there really doesnt even look like a good year for a QB in the next draft). Phillips is the fall guy on this and is probably glad he doesnt have to put up with it anymore. Jerry Jones is the owner and GM. He is part of the problem, but I don't see him firing himself any time soon.
They have only been 101-99 since Barry Switzer left. This team has been living off past glory and hasnt been what they consider good for quite a while now.
Routine items not allowed at Cowboys Stadium on Sunday:
Everyone entering the stadium must pass through a magnatometer, such as those used at airports, and get a patdown as part of the screening process. The majority of fans will enter through checkpoints on the east side of Cowboys Stadium. Ref. Source 2
The Cowboys are a mess currently. They need major changes to their team, a new owner would help as well. They need an offensive line which is very poor and they need a better receiving corp as well. I think Dallas can turn this around next season with the right coaching.
