Alcoholic Recovering

While I am not a recovering alcoholic, alcoholism runs very deep in my family. In my father's family every male of his generation had drinking problems of one sort or another. In fact, one of my uncles died of schorisis of the liver as a direct result of all the drinking that he did. I never saw him without a beer in his hand.

Now, why do I feel that I can post here when it isn't me, personally. Well, when I wasn't falling my religious beliefs I was a social drinker. I had a counselor tell me that she saw all kinds of red flags in the way I drank. She was concerned that at some point in my life, if I continued to drink I would be at great risk myself. So, for me it is good that I don't drink or some day I might be struggling to recover.

Alcoholic Recovering

I realize I'm new to this site, but I'd like to congratulate anyone and everyone working to overcome such addictions.

People don't realize that just because Alcohol is legal, and easily obtainable that it's not a -real- addiction. Addictions come in all shapes and sizes.. and Alcoholism is a very real and potent disease to overcome.

While, I, Myself am not an alcoholic.. Several members of my family, including my mother, my father, my step-father, and both of my elder sisters.. and an aunt and uncle are all alcoholics.. My mother, step-father, and one of my elder sisters are recovering, and I understand the pain and anguish that they suffered to get to this point.

Alcoholism gave my aunt a brain aneurysm, and ultimately killed my uncle.. My step-father was on the same path, but due to my mothers intervention, he was able to be saved from death.

Withdraws are difficult.. I held my sister's hand throughout hers.. I was there for her both mentally, physically and emotionally when no one else could be.. It was difficult.. but her willpower was enough to get her through.

I would firstly just like to say well done to Toxic for being so brave and being there for your sister. It can't be easy to be in a family that has alcoholism all around it. And well done to all of you for not drinking.

I live in Britain in a society and youth culture that has deep problems in "binge-drinking"; Britain has always had problems with over drinking, going back hundreds of years.

The current tendency of my generation is having a "live for the weekend" attitude; whereby everyone goes out to a pub or club as soon as Friday arrives, and gets as drunk as possible. Even a "quiet" night in usually needs to be supplemented with alcohol or some other substance. I am finding myself caught up in this cycle and every sunday morning seem to be telling myself that I will never drink again - however, I work hard through the week and when Friday arrives I feel that I have earned a drink or two.. or three etc. The trouble is - so many people around me - friends and their friends - seem to be ignorant of the damage they are causing themselves. It is not uncommon for some of my older brothers' friends to drink over 10 pints (500ml) of lager in single sitting.

I'm sure that if alcohol were invented today it would be completely illegal - it is without doubt one of the strongest drugs out there; unfortunately it is such a staple of modern living that it will never be banned.

But once again, well done to all of you.

Recovering Alcoholic

Alcohol is nasty, both my parents are alcoholics its part of the reason I got out of home so quickly. My mother has tried many times to put an end to it, and recover but each and everytime she ends up haveing one bad day and hitting the drink again.
it breaks me up inside.

I wish I could help, I offer my support but is there anything else I can do other then be there?

Hello my name is Klar. I am a alcoholic. I found that I was a alcoholic after I put over 700 miles on my truck and I do not remember driving it. I was lucky and did not kill or injure anyone. That was a big wake up call for me. I stopped drinking hard alcohol after that. I still drink a beer here and there but I do not need to drink beer. I can walk away from a beer any time I want. I have many times. I know if I drink anything stronger than beer I will have a relapse. I am not going to let that happen.
