In a follow-up to this story the mother later died and it is truly sad. Can you imagine the impact of learning that you were born from a mother that was not even conscious enough to know what was going on? I hope the child has no neurological or physiological handicaps because of the trauma of the mother.
I read about this, and it's so sad! The poor mother was dying of cancer, and the cancer basically did kill her before the baby was mature enough to be born. She (what was left of her) died immediately after her body was removed from life support.
But I heard that the baby was "very vigorous" and that is a good thing.

ReneeTpaUSA, that is correct, and these kinds of instances tells me that despite my great struggles I need to count my many blessings. On another note, and it may sound bad, but I have the best of intentions... who knows how the child may have had to grow up with physical / mental complications and motherless. Maybe it is better this way. He can hopefully start anew and raise another family.
My thoughts seem to walk a fine line between allowing science to control fate and allowing nature to take it's course, but I thought this would have been a true miracle had the baby survived. And don't worry, JB, it doesn't sound bad, but it's true, having been that premature, there's no way of knowing the extent of the developmental issues the baby may have had (besides the intestinal problems they were aware of). Two months is really premature, and at one pound, the poor baby had the odds stacked against her.
This really is sad that the baby died. This woman wanted so much for her child to live. The father did everything he could to give that baby a chance. How sad.
However, on another note, I remember thinking how difficult it was going to be for the baby having been named after her mother who had died and remained on life support for her to have a chance. That kind of legacy might have been very difficult to deal with as a child. Yet, no doubt this child would have been very much loved.
