Commuters need to plan on extra time to get home Monday, with heavy snow piling up as a major winter storm wallops northern Utah. Don't be fooled and go by just what you see in Salt Lake County. Davis, Weber, Morgan, Box Elder, Cache and Utah counties were being plastered by the white stuff by mid-afternoon.

Utah's population grew fastest in nation
Utah's population grew faster than any other state last year, the Census Bureau said Monday. It estimated that Utah's population grew by 2.5 percent between July 1, 2007, and July 1, 2008, or by 67,499 people. Meanwhile, the nation's population grew only by an estimated 0.9 percent - or a rate slightly more than one-third as fast as in Utah.

1 in 12 Utahns born in foreign country, census says
University of Utah research economist Pam Perlich notes that great diversity is behind those averages, and cautions people not to stereotype immigrants. While many have lower incomes, "half of our medical scientists in the state are foreign-born. Mario Capecchi, the Nobel Prize winner here at the university, is foreign-born," she said. Ref. Source 9

Move over, Disneyland. Your claim as "the happiest place on earth" is being challenged by a new Gallup "happiness" poll that ranks Utah as No. 1 for well-being among the 50 states. Not bad for a state recognized in 2001 as the state with the highest rate of antidepressant use in the United States. Ref. Source 8
Utah has record numbers of STDs
Young Utahns are contracting chlamydia and gonorrhea in record numbers, prompting state health officials to take aim at STDs through a new and frank public-awareness campaign. A report released Thursday by the Utah Department of Health shows the number of chlamydia cases rose 50 percent in the past five years to a total of 23,166 - making it the state's most frequently reported communicable disease. The number of gonorrhea cases doubled during the same five-year period, totaling 3,451. Ref. Source 5

Five outdoor taco carts are within a block of the corner of State Street and 800 South in Salt Lake City, and each enjoys long mid-afternoon lines waiting for sizzling, aromatic tacos made not only of beef or pork, but also tongue or tripe.
