I guess I don't see anything abnormal about this because a lot of churches here have commercials on the television. What urks me sometimes is how they are presented. Some of them focus on movies or books rather than the message of God or fellowship or something really related to church. I reckon they are playing off of the idea of "It doesn't matter how you get people here, just get them here." But other than that, I don't really see a problem with people advertising a church, as long as it is done in good taste.

I think this is a wonderful idea. We, as Christians, have a responsibility to spread the Gospel. I think, this means we have a responsibility to use every reasonable method available to do so. You need to advertize where the people are. It doesn't do much good to run ads in church bulletins for example, because that is like "preaching to the choir."

I believe, it really should be a matter of get them to church any way you can. Then, hopefully, once there, they will listen to the message and feel the Spirit.

In after wisdom,

I support this wholeheartedly. Referencing books or movies to get folks to set foot into a church isn't a "bait and switch" in any way. After a bait and switch, the customer (or church-goer - bear with me) isn't better off. But here, they showed up and possibly learned something that'll more than likely benefit them - hence, better off.

Other evidence? The uber-cool billboards (let's be honest - I just like them) showing up from - God - great gimmick, and pretty darn effective, I'd say.

Babyblues (Hi!) has a good point, though: keep it tasteful. The average viewer is no dummy as to what goes on in a church - treat your audience like an adult and show them truth rather than what appears to be a hastily put together video of a rubbish band.
