Alan Richman traveled 23,750 miles and consumed more than 150,000 calories while taking the measure of 162 burgers across the country
The hamburger is a symbol of everything that makes America great. Straightforward, egalitarian, substantial, and good-natured, it is also a little bloody at times.
It may come big and ungarnished, the East Coast ideal, tender and untroubled by bones or gristle, everything you look for in a filet mignon but seldom find. It may be the West Coast model, swelling with vegetation, brimming with health and well-being, piled high with all that a seed catalog can provide. A great burger, regardless of regional differences, instills a sense of optimism and fulfillment, that all is right at the table or the counter or the woodgrain, screwed-to-the-floor, fast-food booth.

I have never been to any of those places mentioned on the list and I probably never will, but if I were to select the best specialty burger then I would have to go for my own homemade cholesterol teaser. The problem with it is getting all the ingredients:
Butter hamburger bread with sesame seeds, bacon (crisped), pineapple slice, one sliced tomato, onions (both fresh and grilled), 1 leaf of lettuce, of course the lean ground beef and then condiments; mustard, bar-b-que sauce and a bit of mayo.
I found it curious that all of the cities mentioned in his top list were large well known cities. I would have expected a few more small town shops especially where they raise cattle. Would like to hear a bit more from the fly over country that I love. (fly over country refers to those less populated areas between the big cities of USA where people just kind of fly over in planes.)

I will probably never get to try one of those burgers, as I live too far away.
The best Hamburger that I have ever had though, was in France at one of these fast food lorries by the road side.
Very unhealthy I'm sure, but excellent in taste!
The Hamburger was made up of--
1 hamburger on the base of a burger bun, then it had cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato, cucumber, a scoop of fries, bacon bits, mayonnaise, tomato ketchup, a fried egg on this, then another burger on top,and more ketchup, topped with the burger bun top. Yummy!
It took about 30 minutes to eat it all!
My Grandma made the best home made burger, she used to put a full salad on it, of lettuce, tomato, onion and cucumber, and then put sliced boiled egg, ...that really enhanced the burger!
