I am, by no means, a poet. Taking a Creative Writing class is pushing me into writing poetry, though. I'm posting two Free Verse Poems I have written. Both are slightly...depressing.
I Pledge
I pledge allegiance to the flag
of the United States of the Corrupt
And to the Republic which preaches individuality
but strives for uniformity
One nation in constant bickering,
Crime, and deceit
Indivisible, except within our own walls
With liberty, if you aren't God
And justice, unless you carry the title victim
For all who carry the right clout
What happened to "Love they neighbor as thyself"?
What happened to peace of mind: who needs to lock the door?
Where did the friendly smiles go, and the cheerful voices in the store,
"How are the kids?"
When did pushing the other guy in the mud to raise yourself on the pedestal
become a requirement for success?
I pledge allegiance
to the days of old
Neighbor helping neighbor
Salad bowl unified in passion
The days of high moral standards
Edifying one another
When did the world become about me?
When will it become about us instead?
Eyes of the Lost
I see the way you hide behind your façade
Your smile not quite reaching your eyes
I see the way you shy away from talks of family
growing quiet and silent, your eyes on the floor
I see the look of desolation as you sit alone
the last to be picked up
day
after
day
I see the determination in your eyes
to smile in the face of adversity
Your resolve to rise above the land of the
forgotten
unnoticed
reviled
I see the woman you can become as you march forward
You can rise above the mire and press on to victory
I see you for you - a hurting child who can
endure
triumph
And one day conquer the world
