Why Did You Join The Military?
If you were ever part of the military, why did you join? How long did you serve, what branch, etc.?
I was in the United States Marine Corps for two years. I had always planned to go into the Air Force when I finished high school. I figured the military could give me a skill and pay me while I was learning it.
Well, I went to sign up. The recruiting office was a long narrow building with the Marine Corps recruiting office on one end, then Navy, Army and Air Force. I entered in the side where the Marine Corps office was. The recruiter sold me a line about being one of the few, and elite. I bought it hook, line and sinker.

I joined before 9/11 happened. I had already finished college and was not looking to the military as a stepping stone. Instead, I joined the military because I think all should earn and contribute to the freedom they enjoy. I have had family members in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Now it was my turn to represent my generation and its values.
As you can most likely tell from my username, I am in the US Navy. I have been in for about a year . I joined because I wanted a way to obtain my college education without going into debt. There was also an element of patriotism , and maybe a little romantism in the dicision, since my Uncle's service, and his stories of the Navy inspiring me to join. Lastly, I needed to get my life jump started, to achieve my goals. I think joining the military is a complex decision, but mostly because it presents an oppurtunity.
I joined not long after high school. A friend of my brother had joined and told me how much he was enjoying it. Not long before I joined he invited me on a family and friends cruise on Abe from San Diego to Seattle. I went and talked to a recruiter after I got back. I enjoyed my time in and then I left. The Navy did more for me than I could have hoped for. I received an education, saw a bunch of stuff, and the GI Bill helped me to go for some more education after I got out.
I'm currently serving in a branch of the Royal Naval Reserves called the URNU (University Royal Naval Unit). We train once a week, and go to sea during the holidays and weekends on our ship (an Archer class P2000 Patrol boat). I'm an Officer, currently with the rank Officer Cadet, I should hopefully be a Midshipman by the Summer. I joined because I've always had a strong interest in the RN, but want to be a full-time teacher when I graduate, so the reserves allows me to combine both ambitions.
