About to join the reserves myself as I have a good setup at the moment job, house, friends and family and couldn't handle being away for 5 years so I figure the recruits will give me a good chance to experience alot of stuff I normally never would without leaving everything behind.

You're fooling yourself if you think that by being in the reserves means you won't be called up for risk free action abroad. Our government has continually shown that war is an important element in 'economic growth'.

Our government? I'm in Australia we don't have a problem with anyone except for America always asking for military favors and cattle fotter.
Then the government wanting to suck up sends our troops and some of the reserves that volunteer, civilians have a big cry, he calls them back and we go and build houses or something. I've had friends in the reserves for the past 8 years and they have been overseas but never under attack.
But I can't say I'm aware of whats going on lately as I don't really pay attention to the war as I don't like the one sided reports on the news or all the political lies, they mask it one way or the other but it all comes down to greed.
that reminds me of some S.O.A.D songs now I'm gonna go find a music section.

Sorry I didn't notice your national flag. Doesn't really matter though because like you said we are going to call you up from down under to participate in a distant war in an unknown desert.

Isn't the military pretty much learning how to kill, take orders and discipline?

I tried to join the military, I tested really high on the chart. However I have scars from self inflicted wounds on my forearms so they would not take me.
One thing I have come to understand about the soldiers in the military is that they are people just like everyone else. I always looked at them as something more than people for some reason. They have to deal with killing someone who may have been a civilian, that's rough.
Being in situations were your facing death at any moment, at a whim. When I try and picture myself in their shoes and imagine what that does to a person, . . .
