Introduction DianeC

Hi Diane. I just read your blog. It must be very frustrating the constant change of mind of doctors on your son's diagnosis. Sometimes doctors make me sick. I was just researching about Autistic Spectrum disorder but it seems to me that is very different from ADHD so I do not know how they can get confused. Besides the hyperactive, what are his symptoms?. Felipe has ADHD but he also has a speech disability and probably some sort of development delay, we are taking him to the speech therapist tomorrow and then to a psychologist. I know how you feel because it is very frustrating not to know for sure what is going on with your kid since early intervention is extremely important on our cases. Please keep us informed. All the best my friend, hang in there! smile.gif

Oh Thank you LDS, that was really kind of you.

He has behavioral problems, which we don't know how much is to be put down to the abuse that he suffered before we adopted him, also there has been the grief of separation from his natural birth Mother, again we don't know how much affect is to be included in his behavior.(I think he is going to be permanently scarred by some of the abuse)

regarding speech problems, people are split on this issue again. We feel that he has a speech problem, as his Sister does also, and a lot of his words are not sounded correctly, his nursery also felt that he had a speech problem, so he had input from a speech therapist until we moved house, and the new speech therapist says there is nothing wrong with his speech, although his new school says there is?

He has extra energy for around 3 kids, some days he just runs round and round until he falls over.

Some days he is really talkative, other days he won't say a word, and his silence can continue for well over a month without uttering a single word. In this time, he seems to revert back to being babylike, as in he starts to crawl around, and dribble pours from his mouth, and he has no eye contact-- ever.

Some days, he comes across as being highly intelligent and thoughtful.

He has no sense of danger, or road sense, even if it has been repeatedly told over and over to him, but according to school he is of 'bright intelligence', and is good with putting things in order, other days he seems to sink into a deep depression-- which is something that the specialists are going to look into. (Social services told us when we adopted him to prepare ourselves for the worst regarding this, as they feel that he has been suffering with depression since he has been 16 months old)

And finally, he doesn't follow orders or direction, and doesn't care less if he is in trouble or not, he will repeatedly do the same things until he has had enough, trying to make himself the 'boss' of the situation, manipulating things to push others out of the equation.

I really don't know what the answer is, as so many diagnosis' are being given and retracted back!

I bet you regret asking now.. laugh.gif
All the best ,Diane.

I do not regret at all asking about it! I feel for you and I know it helps a lot to talk about it. Actually reading what you are saying made me think how a crying baby I am sometimes talking about Felipe, yes he has many problems but you seem to have your plate really, really FULL.

I am not a doctor but based on the description you are talking about, it seems to me that your son's behavior is due to his past abuse. Do you know the extent of his abuse? Are you aware if his birth parents were in drugs? The reason for asking is that I know a lady who adopted three kids and the three of them have problems. They are all bi-polar because their birth mom used to do drugs although bi-polar is not necessarily linked to drugs. Have you research about bi-polar disorder? Your kid's behavior sound just like it. Check this out:

Try to get different opinions if you are not convinced of the diagnosis. Doctors sometimes treat you like a number only. :rolleyes.gif:

Introduction DianeC

I appreciate you caring LDS, he is booked in to see a psychologist next month, it has been stated that he could have been suffering with depression for a couple of years, although nobody in authority has acted on it.

I hadn't connected Bi-polar as being the same thing as Manic depression, it would appear that you are probably correct in your suggestion, as we have 2 out of 6 siblings, the eldest 3 are in their 20's and all suffer with manic depression, as do several other members of their close birth family.

I don't know whether drugs have been used, as we are only given certain bits of information, it would have been helpful if we could have had the full information, but it's all down to client confidentiality.

Looking at the information you kindly provided, there are quite a lot of things that add up, especially the rages/tempers when he is told "no",and the clingy behavior, (as I was reading it, he was clinging to my neck, telling me I couldn't love anybody else except for him-- not even Daddy")

When he is in a good mood, which isn't too often, he really is the sweetest, loving little thing, and this is what I hold on to-- It's a good job I am an optimist!

You are a good friend LDS, and you're right, it has helped to talk, thanks for listening!
Very best wishes, Diane.

DianeC Introduction - Page 14

Hi Farseer, thanks for asking, we all arrived back a couple of hours ago, we enjoyed it despite the bad weather,I damaged my hand just before we set off to go on holiday (I shut it in the trunk of the car) laugh.gif, so I had my arm in a sling for most of the holiday, hence I didn't get to the library to go on the forum. I have still not got any feeling in one of my fingers, but can't complain, all the fun of our journey in life! (at least the rest of my hand is now okay) Hope you are well,
Best wishes, Diane.

Ouch! Oh my goodness, how terrible to hurt your hand that way - and it must have been severe to still have numbness in your finger! I hope that heals up quickly for you.

Welcome back to "regular" life smile.gif
