House Of The Lord

When someone uses the phrase 'House of the Lord' can it be used when referring to a chapel (Ward or Stake building) or is it to be used for the Temple only?

Lord The House

Well, I always thought that the House of the Lord is the Temple only. I know many people refer it as chapels but maybe the key word here is "THE". This is what Elder Holland said:

"I make a special appeal regarding how young women might dress for Church services and Sabbath worship. We used to speak of "best dress" or "Sunday dress," and maybe we should do so again. In any case, from ancient times to modern we have always been invited to present our best selves inside and out when entering the house of the Lord-and a dedicated LDS chapel is a "house of the Lord."

He said " a house of the Lord" NOT "The house of the Lord".

The House of the Lord and a House of the Lord is one and the same or is it merely a play of words - something to be considered. Maybe the idea was to establish the same kind of reverence as the temple, but since Chapels allow anyone to enter I wonder if it really can be considered the same.

I agree. Actually I was reading yesterday that Pres. Hinckley said that " a temple is a house of the Lord". So, I do not know really the difference then based on Elder Holland's statement. In my opinion, there is a huge difference between a dedicated chapel and a temple.

I think one is figurative and one is literal. Pretty much all churchs consider their meeting houses as houses of the Lord. It is a "house" where we go to worship him. A temple, however, is a "house" wherein he truly resides.

Although I tend to agree, the way it is worded does not hint towards it, hence I wonder what is the reason for the emphasis besides possibly reverencing the place. There are other places that are dedicated that are not Chapels or Temples, can these be considered in the same category?

House The Lord

If you recall in the New Testament the Lord said, "And Jesus saith unto him, the foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man hath not where to lay his head." (Matt 8:20)

This is because the Temple had be polluted and the Lord of Peace had nowhere that he could call his home.

The Temple is his home on earth, when he comes to earth to talk with individuals or for other reasons he comes to the Temple, Thus the Name The House of the Lord. It is where the Lord himself, can come. If the Temple in Jerusalem would have still been kept sacred at Christs time he would have rested in the Temple.

Yes, you're right but we are discussing about the difference of calling the Temple the House of the Lord and a dedicated chapel with the same name. Is there a difference?. Based on Elder Holland's statement above, it seems like both are "Houses of the Lord".
