The Church really takes the naming of a Saint very seriously. This is part of the reason it takes so long to canonize a Saint. There has to be 2 verified "miracles" created by the nominated. This verification takes a long time. Also, the Church doesn't want the passing of a loved member to be a reason for a quick nomination and confirmation of a saint. Mother Teresa and Pope JPII are prime examples. As a young priest told me, "the Church wants their Saints to stand the test of time as well as the popularity test they won here on earth".
