Helping Children Become Independent

GAINING INDEPENDENCE

You, too, can have kids that clean the toilet. Better than that, says Merrilee Browne Boyack, you can have kids that not only help around the house, but grow up to be capable, self-reliant, independent adults.

Independent Children Helping

I have often found that the more you encourage a child to do something because you believe in them and that you show them that you are giving permission to do so (whatever the task), the more confident they become. However, the opposite is true and a child can become very dependent and shy if no time is taking to give responsibility and show gratitude.

One thing we do at the day care I work at is to give each girl little responsibilities. They learn basic responsibilities such as keeping up with their snack money, putting their GI Bucks (a money system we have set up for the girls that they can earn when they do do something awesome) in the ATM. We make them learn to clean up after themselves. We've taken away their privilage to talk during snack time more than once because they were not cleaning up after themselves. A lot of children learn to be independant if adult figures give them smaller responsibilities and gradually move up, and they won't be resentful.
