Religion, science battle it out in 'Witchfinder'

As we head deeper into the 21st century, the eternal tension between science and religion remains a cultural flashpoint. In his historical fiction tour de force The Last Witchfinder, James Morrow explores a watershed period beginning in 1688 England and Colonial America.

Witchfinder

I haven't heard of this book before, but after reading the intro to it, it sounds very good. I will try to order it through our library.
A few years ago I went to see the play 'the Crucible', this was a fantastic play, and seems to have been set in the same sort of era/thoughts as the book mentioned.
It was a real 'eye opener' as to how these so called witches were determined to actually be witches ie-- if a person was thought to be a witch, hundreds of years ago in England, other countries too I believe, the person was tied to a 'ducking stool', then they were submerged fully under the water. If the person either got themselves free, or came up after several minutes still alive, then they were deemed to be a witch, and sent to be burnt at the stake. However, if the person came up from the water dead, then it was declared that they weren't a witch after all, as they hadn't used any 'powers' to save themselves. With this in mind, you didn't stand much chance either way, because as far as the authorities were concerned, you would die one way or another once they had decided that you were a witch!
