
RUNNER DIES 200M FROM CHRISTCHURCH MARATHON FINISH
A runner in the Christchurch marathon died after collapsing just 200m from the finish in yesterday's race.

How very sad this is. I will be curious as to why he died. If he was in training for a marathon then he had to be in good shape. It will also be interesting to find out how old he was. None of this information is as yet available.
That's very sad, dying period is sad, but at only 200m from a finish line in front of all those people strikes me as even worse. Just because someone is fit doesn't mean they can't have a heart attack, though I'm not saying that's what happened.
This reminds me of marathon runner Chris Legh, who was 50m away from the finish line when he collapsed and almost died. He is featured in a Gatorade commercial here in the US, and they show footage of him trying to crawl on hands and knees to the finish line. He eventually went unconscious.
