USA Torture All over the world

CIA Secret Prisons - Torture - Page 2

The problem with your hypothetical scenario is if you torture someone you get unreliable intelligence. An Australian was tortured through extraordinary rendition in Egypt and basically told the Americans what they wanted to hear so he would not be tortured.

He lied as he had no involvement or links to any terorrist organisation. He was wrongly detained and locked up in Guantanamo Bay. He has now been released without charge.

There is irrefutable evidence that intelligence through torture is unreliable. So even if it was morally acceptable, it doesn't work.

And there have been so many cases of suspects being tortured through rendition whom have since been proven innocent. So are we going to go around destroying poeple's lives without any proof of their guilt? There has to be a better way.

And this whole nonsense about there being a significant terrorist threat is just a fantasy anyway. Political leaders are using fear to justify their ideological crusades.

Torture Prisons Secret CIA

I read this case recently and if it is true, I find it to be very disturbing. This guy in a Spanish newspaper even said he was raped the same night he was kidnapped by the CIA.

Man sues CIA over torture claims

A man who says he was a victim of the CIA's alleged secret prisons is suing its former chief over torture claims.

Khaled al-Masri says he was kidnapped in 2003 while on holiday in Macedonia, flown to Afghanistan and mistreated.

His is a rare legal challenge to the US policy of "extraordinary rendition" - flying suspects to third countries without judicial process.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said this week the US does not practice or condone torture.

Human rights groups say extraordinary rendition is a violation of international law. The US maintains that all such operations are conducted within the law....

I've heard about this case as well. Apparently Ms Rice admitted that the US made a mistake to German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

This man should be offered compensation. It is a bit sad he should have to mount a legal challenge.

This is a huge story in Europe and around much of the world. But there hasn't been many comments on it from our friends in the US.

Is this is a big story over there? What is your opinion about this?

I think if any country runs illegal torture prisons such as this it is shameful at best, a crime against humanity at worst. I am amazed how little coverage the US media is giving this story.

This is a massive scandal and the people of America ought to be outraged their intelligence agency is operating in such a fashion. This reminds me of the KGB. I would be interested in hearing what people who live in the US think about this?

Does anyone care?

Surely the opposition parties must be raising this in parliament? Whoever is responsible for these prisons, including European hosts, and all political figures trying to cover it up, must be sacked immediately.
