Pope & Cardinal?

Pope & Cardinal?

Are there any references to the titles: "Pope" or "Cardinal" in the Bible as there is with the titles: "Bishop" and "Priest"?

Cardinal and Pope

The titles of Pope and Cardinal came with the evolution of christianity itself. It was said that Peter was the first Pope, though it has no real substantial evidence to prove the beginning of his Papal authority. But much like the history or christianity it self, much of the "Papal history" is a mish mash creation of Papal secession that never existed and has no historicity to back it up. The term Cardinal actually didn't exist till the fifth or sixth century and was a way to prep bishops for the Popes job.

Pope & Cardinal? Catholicism Studies

I thought maybe I should answer from a Catholic perspective.

No, while the words weren't used in the bible, what is biblical is the passage where Christ said to St. Peter, "you are rock, and upon this rock I build my church". I can get you the specific passage (book, chapter, verse), if necessary.

This is the basis of the reason we (Catholics) see St. Peter as the first leader of the Christian church - and soon enough, we came up with terms for our leadership.

For a chronological list of the leaders of the Catholic Church (popes), see this link:
