Obama probably did not want to have direct deaths on his head, but such is the call when you are Commander-In-Chief. However, it seems that the Somalis are taking revenge for the deaths - right now a Senator in Somalia was just under attack with mortars, but no one was hurt.
The United States (during the Jefferson administration) actually fought an undeclared war in the early 1800's against the Barbary Pirates near Northern Africa.
There are parallels between that war and what we are going through now. Europe had payed the Barbary pirates ransom back then for about 30 years before the United States intervened and stopped the practice through force.
Jefferson said of paying pirates for the ransom of US citizens at that time

I hope Obama thinks the way that Jefferson did and acts quickly. I can't understand why it would take so long for him to allow the forces to act when it was within their sphere to do so.
"Congratulations, President Barack Obama. You would have gotten the blame had it gone poorly, you get the credit today for doing the right thing. Would have liked to not have it take five days, but congratulations, you did the right thing." - Glenn Beck
You Are Being Lied to About Pirates

In 1991, the government of Somalia - in the Horn of Africa - collapsed. Its nine million people have been teetering on starvation ever since - and many of the ugliest forces in the Western world have seen this as a great opportunity to steal the country's food supply and dump our nuclear waste in their seas.
