Brokeback Mountain

There has been much speculation about the movie Brokeback Mountain, which portrays the story of two men who fall in love. But to many conservative viewers, this is a movie that condones homosexuality, infidelity and violence. The movie helped me, a heterosexual, understand a part of life that I have not experienced firsthand. But did this movie make me believe it is OK to end a relationship I am currently in for another woman? The answer is no.

My personal feelings on the subject of homosexuality have caused me not to go and see this movie. My wife really wants to see it, especially now that it has won so many awards, but I am still not sure about seeing it. I do however need to keep an open mind about these types of issues, and will probably end up watching it some day.

School distances itself from 'Brokeback' actress

QUOTE
A provocative film about two cowboys in Wyoming whose friendship becomes a romance, "Brokeback Mountain" is a long way from the rigorous religious precepts of Santa Fe Christian and the G-rated productions of "The Sound of Music" at CYT. Nevertheless, Carla Williams is ecstatic about her daughter's success: "She's sweet, she has a heart, I'm so proud of her."

Not so proud is Santa Fe Christian headmaster Jim Hopson. "We don't want to have anything to do with her in relation to that movie," said Hopson, who turned down a request from a Union-Tribune reporter to visit the school and chat with students about the movies and one of their own being up for an Academy Award.

"Michelle doesn't represent the values of this institution. We would not approve of her movies and TV shows (including the teen drama "Dawson's Creek"). We'd not like to be tied to 'Brokeback Mountain.'

"I hope we offered her something in life. But she made the kinds of choices of which we wouldn't approve. 'Brokeback Mountain' basically promotes a lifestyle we don't promote. It's not the word of God."

It's interesting that the Christian school where she got her start is now distancing themselves from the actress because of the moral issues presented in the film. It will be interesting to hear what her retort would be if she were asked about the school stance on this movie and her being a part of it.

I have no interest in seeing this movie at all. I am usually not interested in seeing 'two people fall in love' and so I am definitely not going to sit through 'two men fall in love'. Regardless to the acting I am in no way surprised that it would win many awards since it is this kind of thing that Hollywood wants to promote and make more socially acceptable.

I have not seen the movie and have no desire to. Recently I was in the locker room of my gym when somebody started talking to me about that movie I felt very uncomfortable with that subject in that environment I hope that doesn't make me a homophobe.

I have no problem with see a movie about gay men, but I just am not much for love stories. I have it on netflix for rental because my wife wants to see it. I should be able to give it a real review in about three weeks or so.

I have seen this movie and feel that it is a bit overrated. The love making scenes between the two guys were not really that bad, far less graphic than a lot of soppy love stories. At first I was a bit uneasy to see two guys doing it in a tent, but then again, I"ve seen just as disturbing scenes at gay nightclubs on Oxford Street.

The movie is about the love story on one level, but also the hardships of having a gay relationship in intolerant parts of the US. The gay bashing at the end of the movie was far more disgusting than the tent scene, in my opinion.

At times this movie really dragged on and too little was made of the moral failure of two men who cheat on their wives. You got the impression that cheating was an irrelevant side effect of all the joys a gay relationship can deliver, no pun intended. But this is perhaps how it is for gay, married men. Who knows?

The acting was fairly good, although Heath Ledger's take on an American accent was embarrassing to say the least. Gillenham was brilliant in this movie. The rest of the cast doesn't add a great deal of depth.

This movie does succeed in illustrating just how hard it can be for a marginalised section of the community. Church groups who oppose the content should perhaps watch the film, because it is very far from an endorsement of gay culture.

I would give this film 3 1/2 stars.

I definitely do not agree with this movie (what I have heard - I have not seen it), but people have a right to make a movie about whatever they want. However it is even more sad that they chose to have the men cheat on their wives. You'd kind of think that if they were trying to show the hardships of a homosexual relationship and/or validate them in some way (or something along those lines), they would not portray homosexuals as people who cheat on relationships, no matter what kind. Yes, cheating happens in this world, but I had hoped it was still something that the world in general looked down on, whereas homosexuality is growing more accepted.

Here is an intersting (yet not too surprising) news story:
