I'm glad that DianeC updated this thread because just two days ago, I was traveling in the middle of the road (a very busy road here in Trinidad where lots of cars and buses pass constantly) and at the side of the road was this woman (YES, WOMAN) with her legs wide open and urinating on the side of the road! I was astonished and so sick by that sight *shaking head*. She was not even one block distance from a KFC outlet and several other stores. This society is so primitive, you all have to come here and see it to believe it.

I think in these cases a much stricter punishment is warranted to deter them from doing it again. |

So, is the argument for punishing urination in public because of the exposure factor or littering one? If it is the latter, then it holds no water, as I could easily 'get sick' in public, and not be punished for it. I would have to believe then it is because of the first factor. Therefore, if someone is caught urinating in public, but they are not exposing themselves, I don't think they should be punished. LDS_forever mentioned the lady (not sure I can call her that) who was seen urinating on the side of the street. It didn't sound like she exposed herself to do so, and while it is quite disgusting, it shouldn't be punishable. If the local authorities want to say she is littering or defacing public space, then that opens up the door for even more interpretation eg. my 'getting sick' analogy.

Did anyone shout at her while it drove by, or were they all too much in shock? |

If it gives you such a disgust why look at the "private parts" then? It is not like those people are deliberately trying to attract attention to themselves and what they're busy with.
I do agree there are more convinient places (read public toilets) to perform this natural activity, but everything happens, and as malexander says, really you can be sick in the middle of the street, too.
One more good observation from his part, about littering. I think it's the result I find more unpleasant rather than the action itself. I mean all this smell and look. Would be nice if they simply clean after themselves. In case with urinating it's hardly possible, but in the second case - not so hard. I clean after my dogs.
An occasional glance at "private parts" doesn't bother me much. I mean, it's just a human body, nothing that awful.
