I'm always curious what people from different countries think about music and their idols. Who are the biggest band at the moment? Who have been the biggest in the past decade? What about other musicians? By this I don't mean your favourite, rather the band or musician you think eveyone wants to see.
My selection:
Biggest band now: Cold Play
Past decade: U2
Biggest solo artist now: Gwen Stefani
Past decade: very tough, maybe Madonna?
I listen to Alternative Rock the most. Biggest band in alternative rock this year has to be the Foo Fighters. They are a close first with System of a Down a close second this year. Foo Fighters also rank high in the past decade putting out five cd's in ten years, all in the top five.
As much as I hate to say this.....I think the "Rolling Stones" are still the reigning Kings of Rock 'n Roll. Their durability is astounding. They've been touring so long that they should foster in a new genre of music called..."Undead Rock" because surely Mick Jagger and Keith Richards qualify for lich status.
I also think "U2" is a major top notch band, but for bands of the last decade I have to put in a vote for the "Red Hot Chili Peppers" as well. Since the 1980's the RHCP have been putting out stylish lyrics and vocals with pulsing clash beats, and gaining more and more recognition from listeners. I also think that "Van Halen" has done a remarkable job of continuing to be long-term top marquee stars...but doing it gracefully. Within the world of R&B, I can't name a definitive artist or band that is maintaining top draw status, or breaking new ground. R&B groups come and go too quickly now.
