To me fishing is not a sport but a past time. I like to go out and sit by a lake with my pole and see what bites. I usually eat what I catch and I have taught my kids that fishing is a way to make sure you can eat. I have shown them that keeping a line and a hook in your vehicle can mean you can get food if your stuck someplace away from civilization.

Teach a Man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."

Fishing is one of Man's oldest pastimes, sometimes for sport, sometimes for survival. My fathers generation see no point in fishing for pure sport, we have that luxury.
