I actually watched this real time on CNN and a lot of the footage that they covered was very intense. It really seems to be one of those things that just never really happens. The only problem with that statement is that it has happened in the past. I apologize that I do not have references towards other specific events, but someone on the news this morning mentioned that they keep trying to improve situations to keep this from happening. I have actually looked at this a few different ways... First being that this could have so easily been so much worse. Not to say that a child's death and other injuries isn't bad, but had it slid into a train or mass transit vehicle of sorts, the fatality rate could have been much worse. Secondly, on an aircraft carrier uses a guide wire as an aid to the reverse thrust engine for braking. I know that the mass of the planes they were designed for is much smaller, but can we not use the technology to devise a safer alternative?
