Memoirs Of A Geisha

Well my theatre was not lucky enough to be "select" theatres this opened in this weekend. I am really wanting to see this as the bustle about it seems all positive around here. With mixed reviews from the Boston Herald and Japan Daily news about the release here would like to know what others thought. smile.gif

If anyone has seen it please let me know if its worth the time and money to drive 40 miles to go see it, or if waiting till its out on DVD is a better option. Thanks in advadvance.

Sorry, I haven't seen the movie, but I have read the book. The interesting this is that technically Geisha does not mean prostitute. The author actually studied the arts of the geisha before writing the book in order to make it as realistic as possible. If the movie holds true to the realism, then it looks to be very good.

I did not know this was made from a book. It looks like all theatres will be getting it around Dec 27th. After further looking into this movie it got rave reviews in China and Japan, with exception of the leading actor being Chinese for a traditional Japanese status symbol.

'Geisha' Latest Movie Censored in China

HONG KONG - "Memoirs of a Geisha" has became the latest movie censored in China despite increased openness, and analysts say communist leaders will likely ramp up ideological controls as outside influences flood the nation. China has not explained the decision made public Wednesday to reject "Memoirs of a Geisha," which stars two of China's leading actresses as rival Japanese entertainers. There's speculation the government feared the film would whip up anti-Japanese sentiment because many Chinese remain pained by Japanese atrocities in China during World War II

Geisha Of Memoirs

This is a movie I want to go see. The screen writer graduated from my high school. Of course, she graduated about 30 years before me, but it's still pretty neat because we were a very small town back then. Not that I was here for first hand experience. smile.gif

She also wrote the screen play for Matilda and a few other movies I really enjoyed.

So far all the comments has been from people that have not seen this movie, let me give you a review from someone who has seen it.

The movie is largely depressing. If the director wanted you to gather the heartache of life then he certainly has done it. It is a lengthy sit through with over two hours and twenty minutes. In fact it was so long that I had to take several breaks in between.

The acting was top class although sometimes the accent was so strong that I could not understand what they were saying.

The scenery was majestic, especially the costumes and Japanese gardens - beautiful.
