Primary Children & Money

Consider the following article which is based on under 10 year olds being asked about their goals for the future and their reply being to 'get rich'. Do you think this decision is natural or is it caused by an ever increasing focus on the rich and famous? Do you believe a faulty school system is at fault or society in general?

Money is best thing in the world, say primary children

The next generation of teenagers looks set to be more materialist than ever before. A survey of under-10s revealed that today's primary school children value "money and getting rich" above all other things, regarding them as "the best thing in life".

I don't buy this statement at all. When I was at that age money was a very important part of my state of mind also. I saved every piece of loose change that I could find because my parent didn't just buy me everything that I wanted. It was left up to me to save what little allowance that I received and change that I found to buy myself a lot of the little things that I found that I wanted. I guess in sort of a way that I was meant to learn that money didn't grow on trees or something. I really grew out of that stage during my junior-high years. I realized that there were a lot of things more important than money or what I had and I really have to say that I didn't have all that much. I still have a fondness of having the money in the bank so that I don't have to worry if I have money until my next paycheck, but even as a teenager when I got my first got, I had already forgotten about the getting rich scheme and started to focus on the worry free nature of not worrying about money as long as what I needed was already taken care of.

My baby sister is currently at this stage where she feels money is one of the most important things but she is no where near as bad about wanting as I was. A lot of that is the fact that she has Jesus in her heart. I didn't have that when I was that age. That may be a lot of the problem to be seen. Religious values are a large part of understanding that money and material is not happiness.
