U.Va. Suspends all fraternities in wake of rape allegations
University of Virginia President Teresa Sullivan announced Saturday that all fraternities are suspended until Jan. 9 in the wake of brutal gang rape allegations reported by 'Rolling Stone.' Ref. USAToday
Rolling Stone magazine apologized to readers for a story it published chronicling one woman's account of a gang rape at a University of Virginia fraternity house and the school's failure to respond to that alleged assault.
"In the face of new information, there now appear to be discrepancies in [the woman's] account, and we have come to the conclusion that our trust in her was misplaced," Rolling Stone said.
The fraternity chapter's lawyer, Ben Warthen, told CNN the magazine's story is "Just not true."
UVA had suspended all fraternities until after the winter break in the wake of the report. Ref. CNN
Local police say they are unable to verify "Rolling Stone" Rape story; case "Suspended"
Police in Charlottesville, Va., were unable to verify that an alleged sexual assault detailed in a controversial Rolling Stone magazine article ever took place at the University of Virginia, police Chief Timothy Longo said Monday. Ref. USAToday
Charlottesville, Virginia, police today said investigators found no evidence to support a University of Virginia student's story that she was raped at the Phi Kappa Psi house, an account that Rolling Stone published in November.
"Jackie" Told the magazine that she was assaulted at the house in late September 2012, the article said. Police Chief Tim Longo noted that just because investigators found no evidence to support her account, "That doesn't mean that something terrible didn't happen to Jackie" On the day in question.
Longo said he welcomed any information about the case that might still be available from the public. Ref. CNN
Rolling Stone apologizes, officially retracts discredited story on alleged gang rape at University of Virginia
The Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism issued a scathing report Sunday on the editorial breakdown at 'Rolling Stone' magazine that allowed publication of a searing, now thoroughly discredited story about a woman who said she had been gang raped at the University of Virginia. The review concludes the article is an avoidable 'story of journalistic failure.' Ref. USAToday
