CHEST DOCTORS DISCOURAGE USE OF MOST COUGH SYRUPS
Time remains the only tried-and-true way to fight coughs from colds, but if you must use something, try older medications, says the American College of Chest Physicians.

I -just- read in Health magazine that the newer antihistamines and allergy medicines were basically ineffective. They said that in order to help ease any of the ills of the common cold, that you had to take the "make you drowsy" kind. Most doctors recommend not stifling a cold except to sleep too, right?
Our pediatrician recommends not giving medicine except at night or when it gets really bad. My son gets horrible horrible coughs and we use a Zycam cough mist for it. It is homeopathic and works better than any syrup we have ever used and it works for eight hours. We try to not take cold medicine constantly, I am of the opinion that it hinders your bodies ability to naturally fight off colds and such.
I absolutely agree with you. I just had a bit of an argument with my mother on the phone when she called to tell me how upset she was that my brother went to the doctor with a horrible cold and was told it was a viral infection. She was so upset because she said "And they didn't even give him anything for it" and I tried to explain they couldn't give him antibiotics because it's viral and it would do no good except to further weaken his tolerance for these "superbugs" we're getting. Living in an antibacterial society, we're doing more harm than good sometimes. I will have to try the Zycam cough though, thank you for the idea, my daughter has a cold right now and her coughing is keeping her up at night.
Forgive me, but over the counter works, if it did not why would there be so many brands. Why would people buy it? My thing is DayQuill. It is like a pick me up when I feel the nasty cold coming. I can make it through the day. Why go around sick...After a while a mother knows what to use to keep her child well especially if she is a working mother.
Maybe doctor visits are down - who knows?
