Detecting Evil

Religious gurus of old time were often asked to differentiate evil from good by those who felt they could not 'see' it. Do you think one can have a gift for detecting evil where everyone else see's something normal you are somehow enabled to feel something not right? I am talking about more than simple discernment, it is like an actual awareness of the other side - the evil the lurks. What are your feelings in the matter? How can you recognize if you have this gift and are not merely paranoid?

I am not blessed with this particular gift, but my older sister is. She is quite often hit with very specific feelings about certain people -- she says it is like a piercing in her belly, she can tell they are evil. It has saved her some heartache over the years, that is for sure.

I do think that I have the gift of discernment in other areas, but not this one -- at least not strongly.

Detecting Evil Beliefs Religious General

We were actually talking about something close to this topic in Sunday School today. I think a lot of it has to do with being in tune with the Holy Spirit. I believe that when a person gets this almost nauseating feeling about another person's character, it's the Holy Spirit giving a person a "heads up" about the situation.

I've gotten it a few times, all times when I was alone and was exposed to a possibly bad situation. God just kind of gave me a very strong conviction to get away, and I'm not dumb enough to ignore a feeling like that. There have been other times when I have felt very strange around certain people. There was just something about them that gave me a very uncomfortable feeling.

Similar question would be how accurate is your moral compass. Seems much the way that iron, and electric currents would effect a compass, someone who has an evil current running through them should effect your moral compass and effect those who are attuned to their beliefs. I can rarely tell upon sight if a person will be "evil" but it does not take long through their actions and words for me to come to some conclusion. I would think that those who tend to be more accepting and less judgemental of people might have a harder time discerning.

I cannot really say that I have this gift, nevertheless I can always know how someone truly is by just standing in a room with the person, watching them on the distance or even reading things they wrote on the internet (as an example of people I never met personally). It is just this feeling that something is not right, an uncomfortable feeling that makes me not to want to be around the person, something that tells me that the person is not genuine and no matter what they want to portrait or say, I figured them out long ago.

I do not have this gift either, but several times I have had a really uncomfortable feeling around certain people, I would act on my instinct, and have little else to do with whoever was making me feel like this.

Obviously, as it's only a feeling, I could be judging somebody wrong, but I like most people, so it would take a lot for me to have a bad feeling about someone.

I have a knack for this, in fact, often when others think I am wrong, I often right as the nice smile and wonderful words do not hide the underlying feeling that something is not right. I believe Wyldehorse gave a very good example. I believe all of this can have this gift - discernment, but to have it one must be first at peace with self and with others, in this way you are more open to Detect Evil. Conversely you will always find very talkative busy bodies or carefree whatever happens go lucky people will never have this.

Detecting Evil General Religious Beliefs

I don't really believe that people can detect "evil". The reason being is that I can tell when someone is up to no good, or if they are not who they say they are, but thats not detecting evil. Evil is ones perception based on their own religious beliefs and thus will change the outcome of ones perception of evil. If evil could be setly defined, then perhaps I would be more of a believer. But I wonder how often being able to read people well is confused with perceiving evil.
