Question, I have seen many ads that offer a free domain name registration but this will only be for the first year or two. If you intent on keeping it longer than that then you will have to pay for it. This also doesn't include any hosting costs if you are actually planning to use the domain for anything.

Most times the idea of it being free is that they just register and park it for you. If the domain is going to be usable like pointing to some web site or host then you end up paying.

The other kind of free domain is not really your domain but a sub domain where they attach a unique name to it like myname.thedomain.com hope that helps.
