This anime short series is crazy dark! It starts off great with excellent fight scenes and swooping action sequences. We get to see Gatsu grow mentally, emotionally, and physically until he is nearly unchallenged. Then, it takes a rough turn and suddenly you are left wondering what is going to happen to the band of the hawk. A few events go horribly wrong and the series is in a rut that leaves you stunned. Then it gets weird.....

It spirals into a world of demons and darkness, violence and rage. I like the series, but I was bowled over by the end of it.

Konquerez wrote an excellent synopsis. I would like to add, though that in a few of the episodes, they take little trips into some heavy philosophical discussion. For this alone I would recommend it, well, unless you can't stand that kind of thing. It is a pretty good exploration (although a little minimalistic since it focuses on Guts and Griffith) of the kind of meaning of life questions we all ask ourselves now and again. I would have liked it a lot more, if there had been more episodes and a greater exploration of an excellent foundation.

I found it to be an excellent anime. Though the end was a bit anti-climactic. I wanted to at least know what happens to Caska. I think we are to assume that she is killed but we are never given that kind of closure. It was definetly a mind bender of an ending. I bought the entire series after watching only the first DVD and as we got closer to the end I started to realize what was going to happen and was not very happy. Most definetly a dark anime witha very typical anime ending pain, death, and a sense of helplessness. Though all brought about in a very surprising and ingenius way. I also have some rather intriguing thoughts as to why Griffith let Guts live. But I am not sure if this is the place to talk about it. If this isn't the place could u point me in the right direction?

This is the place, I really would like to get into a more indepth discussion regarding these characters with someone who has watched the whole series. In my opinion, griffith let guts live because he still hated him and wanted him to suffer more, and he was still marked after all. He felt that guts leaving was the complete beginning of his downward spiral. It obviously isn't guts fault, he should have dealt better, but obviously love guts and thought they would be together as a team, as brothers forever. It was just to much for him when guts not only left but bested him and smashed his sword. He was left helpless in many ways and then felt abandoned in the jail.

I can very easily see where many would believe what you say far more than what I say. Especially with how Griffith seems to kinda go haywire after Guts leaves. Thus proving your point of how bonded he feels to him. However when griffith is going through his transformation he seems extremely regretful for what he is becoming, and yes he still becomes it but griffith is so driven by DESTINY that he thinks he has no other choice. I mean throughout the series he talks about how he is going to become king how he knows this to be his destiny. He was TOLD that it was his destiny. Therefore I think that hebelieves that this must happen. He also has the knowledge that guts bested him once before, even with the egg of the king. So whos to say that he can't do it when he is king. He also knows knows that guts was the pivot in all of his battles. That guts stood alone where no other man had against a demon, and that of all his men guts was again the last one standing at his birth as the demon king. Why leave the only man capable of killing his way to you unless you want to meet him again in battle and possibly lose to him. I mean he begs for guts not to touch him b/c he knows that it will be his turning point. The fact that he became so weak kills him. That is also a reason for his decision, I believe, to become king. The story in and of itself is far to in depth for the end to be so blatant.

There is another idea I had as well and please do reply to both. My other thought was that he wants guts to join him. I will go into more depth after I see what you think of this idea.

Okay, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Guts have the egg of the king in the first episode (which is actually presumably the last episode)? When Zodd the Immortal fights the group, he says that he won't kill anyone b/c Griffith has the egg and is therefore a demon or at least part demon. But in a later episode, the smallest kid in the band picks up the egg from the river after Griffith has been tortured, thus losing said egg. But if the kid and Guts can carry the egg are they demon? I apologize for all of this if I'm wrong about Guts and the egg.

Anyway, I think what you both have said is feasible on the part of Griffith. My only question is, was Griffith actually responsible for Guts' survival. I think the story is a little vague on that point. Guts blacks out and wakes up in his father's house. Are we really sure Griffith allowed Guts to live? Also, Griffith made that speech about his equals being on the same level of choice/destiny as he. Did he really want Guts to be his equal? Did he see Guts as he equal? What do you think?

Something you should know if you hated the way it ended. Thats not the end of the story. The manga from which its taken is twice as long. In fact, the series anime covers just under half of the manga. I am in the process of trying to find the manga because I really need to know what happened.

Something else I remembered from the series is that Guts also took Griffiths right hand man so to speak. His girl (can't remember her name) was Griffiths but she ended up following Guts. Ultimately he raped her as the Demon King, which made me believe that he still had feelings for her. He had to do something to destroy his former live.

Another thing I would like to point out is that no matter how Griffiths feels about Guts, Guts definitely hates Griffith now. He was so in love with his woman that he loped his own arm off to try and get to her. In the end, Griffith caused Guts his heart, his arm, and his life. Guts hatred for Griffith and the spirits is deep and drives his hunting of them demons. Its interesting because while he hunts everything evil, the evil in turn is still hunting him and indeed haunting him with that fact.
