As I haven't personally experienced this, I can only say what I believe would be the ideal support.
Ideally, I think that a strong central family comprised of the immediate family and if necessary the extended family. If the addict is a member of a particular religious congregation, it might be very helpful to have the elders of the congregation in on the support. There should be the addict's physician and hopefully a psychiatrist/psychologist on hand for the emotional issues that will undeniably come up both with the addict and his/her family.
