Dyslexia Board
We once had a Member who had problems abiding by our Constructive Posting policy because he was Dyslexic. Do you think we should have a Dyslexia Board? Do you have symptoms of Dyslexia.
I am honestly not sure if a special board for such cases would really be utilized or necessary. If someone with symptoms wishes to be active and does have a difficult time abiding by the rules that we have in place for constructive posting I certainly do not want them to leave nor do I want them to feel as if they are being singled out. Perhaps we could add something to the profile section that would recognize this, without being too dramatic about announcing it of course, but just have a small symbol on their posts or signature section so that it could be understood that some of the policies may be difficult for them. Even someone with symptoms of Dyslexia can have well put together information to share that would be beneficial but we all have to take into consideration that as long as an effort is seen in their posts a little bit of time spent by the moderators on *SOME* of their posts could definitely be justified.
That is a good idea, however, some of their posts are really hard to read and often appears to be English mixed in with a bit of Dutch. Then you have other users trying to figure it out or saying they do not understand and the whole topic begins to focus on the misspelt words. I am wondering which path to take, if any, but I do like the icon listing difficulties a User might have. This can go for other things as well such as blindness.
I agree with Bwren that I don't think an entire board is really called for. I've known several people with dyslexia, and the only way they are going to get any better is by being placed in situations that are challenging. I think a certain level of tolerance should be expected from the members, but I can understand where it becomes a distraction. I think that they should definately take into account the spell checker because that will help them out. If you did create a board just for them, what would it entail? It would kind of segregate them more, I would think. I like the icon idea because it would give everybody a notice saying that there was a reason for how things were going with a certain poster, and that poster wouldn't constantly have to answer questions and deal with people constantly on their back about things being switched around.
I think that perhaps a special icon to indicate they have a disability they may effect their writing/grammar is a good idea. I wouldn't have a problem being patient with someone who has something to say but has a hard time saying it. Although it does get difficult to read sometimes, its not their fault and they should have the opportunity to experience the joys of our community despite their disability.
All good comments stemming from Bwren's icon suggestion.
