Hugh Thompson Jr., a helicopter pilot who trained his guns on American troops to save civilians during the worst atrocity in modern U.S. military history, has died of cancer at 62.

Its odd, but I didn't ever hear of him before his death. When I asked my parents about him, they were very familiar with the name. They were both in the Vietnam War and know him to be a hero and nearly famous trainer of pilots. Its interesting that he made such an impact on one group of people in one generation as to be remembered by people not even in the same branch of the military. But I have never heard of him.
