Brief History:
The death of another aged member of China's notorious Gang of Four marks another milestone in a painful history. During the years of violence and destruction unleashed with Mao's tacit connivance in the 1960s and 70s, Zhang Chunqiao - a Shanghai propaganda official and ex-journalist - played a key role.

I my opinion the Gang of Four were scapegoats. The communist party could not blame Mao for the state that the Cultural Revolution had left China in. The army would not let the politicians continue with the mad practice of sending intellectuals out to the country to be farmers. With the break between the USSR and the PRC the army told the party to get their act together. So less fanatical leaders were put in charge but someone had to take the blame for the years of madness. Thus the party invented the Gang of Four and in 1981 they had a show trial and that's how communist governments use propaganda to cover their mistakes. Were these four anymore guilty then the other party leaders? Probably not, they just lost the internal power struggle.
