When Do You Stop Calling Your Bishop, Bishop? - Page 2

ProngsJP2002, you are most welcome to disagree, however, if you had read my Post carefully you would have understood what I am saying. You said it (Bishop) is a 'calling', it is more than that, the office of Bishop is an ordination, it is an office. A Bishop is never released from the office, but he is released from the responsibility of the office for a period of time when another is called.

In like sense, I was able to serve a full-time mission because of my office of Elder. Likewise, a Priest is able to bless the sacrament because of his office as Priest. However, it is only in the 'moment' (we can all it 'active' duty) where these people have specific responsibility do they merit the title before their name.

However, just because one is ordained does not mean we need to address them by that ordination as other secular Churches after their 'duties' have expired as it were (save for that of Apostle which never expire or Emeritus as dictated by the First Presidency).

Bishop Bishop Calling Stop You When

I disagree. I think these are totally different situations. Your called on a mission for two years, and then released, so after that two year period there's no reason to call you elder, because your no longer an elder.

I do not understand this last statement, just because you have been released from a mission, it does not mean you are no longer an Elder. You still an Elder. There may be not a good reason to call you Elder, but it does not mean you are not. After all, if that was the case, all return missionaries are back within the Aaronic Priesthood and they should not be able to perform all their duties that an Elder in the Church must perform.

because that's what he is. He still holds those keys.

I think you're misunderstanding a very important point. We sustain the Twelve Apostles as Prophets, Seers and Revelators. They ALL hold keys. Yet, there is only ONE man at a time who have the right to exercise such keys at this present time and that's "The" Prophet, in this case, Gordon B Hinckley.

In the case of the Bishop it is the same, since Bishop is an office he will be considered always a Bishop but the keys to exercise such office once he is released, fall in the new one called.
