To me, these two statements do not mesh:

QUOTE
He has said he will speak about the assassination attempt if he is paid for doing so.

QUOTE
Agca claims that he is now a man of peace specially chosen by God. The Vatan newspaper quoted him on Thursday as saying he would write a "new Bible" after his release from jail.

This just makes no sense to me. And, it might be that I am cynical by nature, but someone who is "a man of peace specially chosen by God" should not be looking for money to explain why he tried to kill not ONE, but two people. The Pope, who was gratefully not killed, and a Turkish newspaper editor who he DID in fact murder in 1979.

I believe in forgiveness, please let me be clear. I do not believe that one should be ignorant in that forgiveness. By that, I mean that just because you forgive an animal for biting you, you shouldn't reach a hand back out to pet the same snarling animal. Do I make any sense? I would be wary, is all I am trying to convey.

The Man Who Shot The Pope Catholicism Studies

BBC television news had a report saying the Pope, John Paul II, had publicly forgiven him when he was alive and even visited him in jail. After the visit the Pope confirmed that the professional killer was part of a grander plot by an actual government to kill him, but that has not been verified.

Pope Shot Man The

On the history channel biography of Pope John Paul II said that this event did happen by word of the Popes own claim to have forgiven him. The culprit himself claims he was forgiven also. Of course this was all second hand regarding the popes comments, but its a wonderful story of forgiveness either way. I personally could not forgive someone who shot me. I would want him punished to the fullest extent of the law, and then some.

Now here is another turn to this saga of "Who Done It?". Why would the Soviets want the Pope dead?

The Man Shot Pope

This is a very interesting twist to the attempted assassination of the Pope. The fact that the Russian government was actually behind it proves how influential the Pope was, not only to religion, but politics. I wonder what ramifications this will have in foreign relations for the Russians, especially when dealing with European countries such as Italy?

I am sure they will just sweep this under the rug and call it "Old Soviet tactics that no longer exist", especially because the current Pope seems to be on a drive for peace.
