Teeny Bopper Scribbles
If you have ever been on most other Communities you will see Teeny Bopper Scribbles which can be described as slang mixed with extra characters and shortened words in order to communicate. For instance, 'noob' may mean 'new' or 'l8tr' may mean 'later'. How do you feel about this kind of writing?
I hate it, I simply hate it. It is a desecration of my language. Slang is one thing,. I have even been known to write in dialect. To me,. those are acceptable but I don't even like looking at teeny bopper scribbles. The worst is when someone tries to use them in serious print, such as newspapers, english papers and the like. You laugh, but it has happened.
This is unfortunately become very acceptable on the internet because immature people simply do not want to take the time to learn to type properly and learn to spell the words to make up what they are wanting to say. I really must lack the creativity to understand a lot of the reasons that I have been told for this type of slang. I have in the past caught myself using some of these in some of my writings. I would normally notice this if I had been spending time in chat rooms or on other forums that are not moderated properly. This is very addictive when you look at it for a period of time. I personally recent the use of it. I feel that it is demeaning to the person typing as well as the persons that are the target reader. This is a good example why I believe that there are so many of us here. I can't speak for everyone on that notion but for myself I can give assurance that one of the most appealing fronts of this forum is that it does not lack in the proper grammar.
Although I hate to see this type of writing personally, I don't think it's hard to avoid on the internet. I also think that a lot of teens, tweens, and young people are purposely taking it to the next level. It's just like smoking in the 1980s. It's cool. It's their thing. It's what they do. I've actually seen young girls type words like "exercise" correctly, having forgotten to write in the "slang," and then hit the back space key, re-writing the word as "3x3rc1z." What is this? Some secret language?
Exercise
3x3rc1z

Maybe I'm just weird, but I find a certain aesthetic appeal in the written word. When I see it written out in teeny bopper scribbles I hate it. I hate it with a passion. Thats like taking a famous piece of art and remaking it out of, I don't know, dung. Don't laugh, people have actually done this. Am I overreacting? I just can't stand to look at it, that's why I have stopped chat rooms all together and this is the only board I frequent on a regular basis.
I have used slang in the past I have also used abbreviations to words I don't know how to spell as there are few sites with the spell check ability. I have been penalised twice so far for nonconstructive posts. I think that is because I was used to writing in slang on more common websites there are even some slang that I don't understand which is why I don't use slang much.
E.g. yo this wsite is bad totaly solid
O.k. probably not the best example but you see what I mean.
Message Edited! Persephone: use the Spell Checker! |
Armstrong, it seems to be ironic that you would bring up the subject and still need Persephone to correct your spelling - you can do better - really you can. As far as Teeny Bopper Scribbles - I cannot stand to see it - they actually make me angry in a Community such as this where people take their time to think and post constructively only to have someone come along and post something that is just an excuse for the lack of grammar and spelling. It also symbolizes a lack of thought, since it is common for a person who writes this way to also not say anything of real significance - the goal being to just raise their post count. Yes, I have contempt for Teeny Bopper Scribbles, do not use them if you want to see me happy.
It certainly is ironic and I can see another mistake also (that6). After every message I ALWAYS use spellchecker but sometimes a word spelt incorrectly does not have the right spelling availiable so rather than mess the entire post up I try to get it as close as I can to what it sounds like. I admit I'm not the best speller in the world but I try.
I agree with what your saying JB and I see no one has mentioned that there is a time and place for teeny bopper scribbles.
